La Boite returns to Sydney every second Thursday at the Greek Bilingual Bookshop.
Featuring Sotiris Prokopiou (vocalist, guitarist, bouzouki and baglama player and song writer), Eleni Elefterias (songwriter) as well as various others each week.
The beautiful songs and poems of the 1960s and '70s in Greece but also contemporary original works in similar styles.
All invited to come along and perform a song or a poem in any language but it must incluude a translation or explanation in English so that we can all enjoy it.
The Boite (from the French, meaning box) was originally a small space where people gathered to listen to music and poetry in the 1960's and '70s in Greece. Quite often the subjects of these songs and poems was love and yearning but also political songs, songs of social consciousness and protest songs.
What we hope to bring to life is not just the original old songs but to recreate the energy that was around then and to allow people to actively create their own poetry and songs based on current social and political events and personal feelings.
In the mid to late '70s a group of people led by Peter Carantinos set up the original BOITE in Australia and travelled to other cities and spread these events as multi-cultural performances in intimate spaces, including the Australian Music Centre at the Rocks.
Later in the late '90s Eleni Elefterias had the idea of The Play Space performances where some of the events were in the Boite style. Together, with other known musicians and event organisers , this group created, performed and researched the various musics of Greece and created various tribute concerts, Rembetika presentations and Boite nights with many musicians, actors and poets taking part. Comedy was a major part of these nights and a number of people would workshop and create Greek Australian scripts written by Australian born second and thord generation Greek-Australians.
In 2010, Eleni Elefterias continued with The Play Space in a smaller venue in Hurlstone Park before opening the Greek Bilingual Bookshop where the performances got bigger and at one stage there were one to two performances per month. Many singers and performers in Sydney have performed at the Bookshop or at The Play Space at some time.
Now we hope to go back to the roots of the original boite music.
This music is the non-commercial Greek music, very melodic songs where the words are often poetry put to music and take precedence.
This is not an event for traditional music or dancing. It is also not the type of music you will hear in the Tavernas. It is intimate and meant to be listened to rather than as background music for entertainment.
So, even though we do have chairs available, you can bring a pillow if you prefer to sit in the front and make yourself comfortable. You are also most welcome to sing along as well.
We will endeavour to translate everything and at times we will include music other than just Greek.
Any Joan Baez or Bob Dylan aficionados out there welcome!
We will have Greek Pita, and as the weeks progress, we will include more snacks but you are welcome to bring your own food as long as you take any rubbish with you.
