Roomies Arts are the latest residents to call Art Camp in Camperdown their home. We are so excited to host them and add to our collection of amazing people doing big and great things down there!
Roomies Arts mission is to encourage and promote the independent creative expression and artistic development of people living with disability.
How are you finding it at Art Camp? Have there been any surprises about the location? It’s still early days for Roomies Arts in our new space at Art Camp, but we are very pleased to have a place to call ‘home’ again – it has been a while finding a suitable location! Not really surprises, but we have thoroughly enjoyed meeting our artist-in-residence neighbours, and Camperdown Commons must be the area’s unsung hot-spot for coffee with friends!
Who are the artists working out of Roomies? We aren’t quite set-up to run any workshops as yet, but on an ongoing basis, Roomies Arts represents Mark Hood, Clarrice Collien, John Goldsmith, Maria Sicurella and Leon Sucheki, amongst others. We are always interested to hear from any local artists with disability looking for opportunities to develop their artistic practice.
Our current creative project is: We are gearing up for our first workshop in the new space, titled “My Art My Way: How To Photograph and Talk About Your Art”, to be held on Saturday 25 November 2017. Thanks Inner West Council for our grant to run this. A significant amount of work goes into such events, and as we are all volunteers at Roomies Arts, it’s a labour of love!
Our next creative project is… We plan to run additional workshops in 2018. It’s always a matter of getting sufficient funding to do these things well, but like our Facebook page for updates on our future workshop plans - facebook.com/roomiesarts
What’s flavouring our art right now… The sweet Camperdown air, passion and coffee!
What we like right now… We have been working in partnership with Carriageworks in 2017 during ‘The National’ exhibition on a program to provide invigilating opportunities during the event for artists with disability. This was successful and Carriageworks and Roomies are developing further partnership for similar events next year.
Favourite website… Our own of course! www.roomiesarts.org.au
We just couldn’t pass up on such a good opportunity for a bit of shameless self-promotion.
Favourite place in the inner west… Right now it would have to be Art Camp! We love it!
